Nike, Inc., is an American athletic apparel company founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. Nike is the world’s largest supplier of athletic shoes and apparel, with headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
Nike was founded in 1971 under the name “Blue Ribbon Sports.” In 1971, the company changed its name to Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. While attending Portland State University, where she met Knight, Carolyn Davidson created the brand’s iconic Swoosh logo. Additionally, Nike’s highly recognisable branding includes the “Just Do It” slogan, which made its debut in 1988 as part of a television commercial produced by Dan Wieden, founder of the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy.
Nike has dominated sports – including basketball, tennis, football, skateboarding, and running – throughout its 56-year history through innovation and strategic marketing. Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Ronaldinho, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Ken Griffey Jr., Steve Prefontaine, Ilie Năstase, and Wayne Rooney are among the notable Nike-sponsored athletes. LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Rodriguez, and Michael Jordan all have their own Nike signature shoe lines, with Jordan’s becoming an entirely separate entity. Additionally, Nike has sponsored national teams from the United States, South Korea, Nigeria, and Brazil, as well as the NBA and WNBA.
Tinker Hatfield (Nike Air Max 1, Nike Air Trainer 1, Air Jordan 3), Eric Avar (Nike Air Penny III, Nike Kobe 6) and Peter More (Nike Air Penny III, Nike Kobe 6) were all notable footwear designers at Nike (Air Jordan 1). Additionally, Nike has collaborated with Supreme, Jun Takahashi, Kanye West, Hiroshi Fujiwara, COMME des GARCONS, UNDEFEATED, Vashtie Kola, OFF-WHITE, and Travis Scott, to name a few (many).
While iconic silhouettes such as the Nike Air Force 1, Nike Air Max 90, Nike Blazer, Nike SB Dunk, and Nike Air Foamposite One have their origins in performance sports, they have since gained popularity in the lifestyle and casualwear markets. So much so that they and other formerly performance-oriented models have been absorbed into the Nike Sportswear brand. Nike’s newer silhouettes, such as the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT percent and the Nike React Element 55, have bolstered the brand’s reputation in the running and lifestyle categories. Nike owns Brand Jordan and Converse, which aids in the company’s global expansion.
Nike is making bold bets on sustainability and self-lacing footwear in 2020. Nike’s Space Hippie collection – which launches in July – is the brand’s next foray into eco-friendly products, as the four-piece collection features over 50% recycled materials in its construction. The Nike Adapt Auto Max, which launched on Air Max Day 2020, brings The Swoosh one step closer to a future of automatic lacing.
