Maison Margiela and Reebok have announced the final models that will follow Maison Margiela’s hallmark idea known as the memory of: The Question Memory Of, Zig 3D Storm Memory Of, and Instapump Fury Memory Of. This follows the release of the Club C Memory Of and Classic Leather Memory Of earlier this season.
The Question Memory Of, based on Reebok’s iconic design but reinvented via the memory of, reshuffles the original shoe’s pattern pieces to reveal its seam allowance. Notably, the distinctive lace loops have been relocated to the centre of the tongue. The oval holes are employed as eyelets in this motion, generating lacing evocative of gillies. Parts of the sneaker’s cushioned regions have been sliced to disclose the interior foam as well as the protective tricot mesh overlay, using the decortiqué method – Maison Margiela’s word for ripping apart an object to reveal the structure that keeps it together. The tongue and its oval are coated with hexalite, which is typically found in a shoe’s midsole. Instead of the number 3 that was initially featured on the outsole – a reference to basketballer Allen Iverson, for whom the shoe was designed in 1996 – a debossed number 22 on the heel represents the footwear code in Maison Margiela’s numeric labelling. The Question Memory Of is made of tumbled leather and has an EVA midsole with hexalite detailing as well as an iced TPU outsole.
The Reebok Instapump Fury Memory Of is an exploded-view graphic of the original shoe, separating its recognised components to recreate its original appearance. The flexible bridges that ordinarily appear in the centre hole of the pump bladder from which the sneaker gets its name are used to redesign the rear of the shoe. Using Reebok’s The Pump Technique, an inflation technology created in 1989 to provide athletes with a custom-fit, locked-in fit, the bladder expands in volume, contributing to the design’s airy relief appearance – a feature repeated in the effect of the seam allowance. By removing the shoe’s layers, the natural-colored foam surrounding the heel and mesh attached to the toe are revealed. The flame-shaped mudguard surrounding the toe box is mostly seam-free, adding to the three-dimensional relief appearance. The Instapump Fury is made of mesh and fabric-covered TPU and has an EVA sole with hexalite detailing as well as a TPU outsole.
The Zig 3D Storm Memory Of keeps the iconic zig-shaped outsole of the original shoe but inverts the top to reveal the real tech features contained inside its manufacture. The shoe’s moulded heel cushioning is exposed during this operation, and the airy perforation of its spliced tongue is employed for lacing. A transparent window cut above the outsole reveals the shoe’s printed shell and decorations. The Reebok vector logo is applied in frayed cotton twill coated in foil on the toe. The Zig 3D Storm Memory Of is made of translucent nylon, cotton twill, and foil, as well as its own inside-out microfibre lining. It has an EVA-filled TPU sole with the Maison Margiela stitch logo.
Each model in the collection will be available in Black and White and will be available on May 20th at maisonmargiela.com and Reebok.com. Each one costs $400 at retail.
